Steve,

This is a very well thought out and presented article. You raise a number of good points that I'm sure educators and students alike will take notice. LinkedIn can be a very powerful tool for anybody looking to connect with another sought after person. whether for employment, business, or social. LinkedIn is the "hidden" gem in the social toolbox.

Thanks for the great information!

I have made some similar observations. If Marketing professors do see value with social media, it is purely if the sense of B2B or B2C marketing. Educators in general don't seem to understand the concept that social media can help students to "brand" themselves and better place themselves professionally when they graduate. Agreed that initially it has been the more forward thinking, innovative, entrepreneurial types that are leveraging social media to promote and expand. However, this will become more widespread and students lacking the skills to use social media effectively will be hurt or left with much fewer professional opportunities when completing school.

I have asked recent college graduates with MARKETING degrees questions about what they have covered on Internet marketing. "Not much" was the answer I was given. I don't think most marketing professors have Internet marketing knowledge or college advisors either, for that matter. Maybe they don't validate the power of leveraging the Internet for marketing just yet. For the most part marketing yourself or your brand on the Internet comes from an entrepreneurial, self-motivated quest and I think we are mostly self taught and seek that knowledge from successful Internet marketing experts and they are not usually found on college campuses. Maybe an online course ...
